Not every defence<\/a> ward experiences this in the same way. Every family, posting and childhood is different.<\/p>\n

But for many children growing up in defence families<\/a>, these experiences can become part of something distinctive: the ability to stand on their own feet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Being a defence ward is about more than having a parent who serves in the Armed Forces<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There may be an understanding that duty sometimes comes first. There may be periods of separation, frequent changes in routine and a need for family members to support one another.<\/p>\n

Research on Indian military families has highlighted experiences<\/a> such as parental deployment, separation and relocation as distinctive aspects of growing up in a military family. At the same time, researchers have also looked at the ways children develop coping strategies and adapt to these circumstances.<\/p>\n

These experiences don’t create one particular “type” of person.<\/p>\n

But they can give some defence children<\/a> experiences that stay with them long after childhood.<\/p>\n

Learning to Do Things for Yourself<\/h2>\n

One of the less discussed aspects of growing up in a defence family is learning independence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It may be something as simple as managing schoolwork, getting ready for school, handling routines or helping at home.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, it can mean understanding<\/a> that a parent may not always be available for a school event, a special<\/a> occasion<\/a> or an everyday problem.<\/p>\n

As adults, some defence wards may be comfortable making decisions, taking responsibility<\/a> and handling situations without constantly depending on someone else.<\/p>\n

Of course, independence is not exclusive to defence children.<\/p>\n

But when responsibility<\/a> becomes part of childhood, it can become a deeply ingrained quality.<\/p>\n

When Responsibility Becomes Second Nature<\/h2>\n

In many defence families, children grow up understanding that everyone has a role to play.<\/p>\n

Parents may have demanding professional<\/a> responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Children may therefore learn, sometimes quite naturally, to contribute to the functioning of the household<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It could be helping a younger sibling, keeping track of their own belongings, managing school responsibilities or simply understanding when a parent needs space because of work.<\/p>\n

These may seem like small things.<\/p>\n

Over the years, however, small responsibilities can build confidence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And confidence is not always loud.<\/p>\n

One of the realities of Armed Forces life is that a serving parent<\/a> may sometimes be away from home.<\/p>\n

For a child, this can be difficult.<\/p>\n

But it can also teach an important lesson about relationships<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Being physically apart does not necessarily mean being emotionally disconnected<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Children may learn to stay connected through phone calls, messages, letters, photographs and family rituals.<\/p>\n

An Indian study on children from military<\/a> families<\/a> specifically examined how children experience parental deployment and the strategies they use to cope with periods of separation.<\/p>\n

This understanding can become relevant much later in life.<\/p>\n

A defence child may have had to enter a new school, meet new people, understand a new environment or manage periods when one parent was away.<\/p>\n
